Baby Marco

Baby Marco and his parentsThe Daily Mail , a paper in the UK, has this heartwarming story of a couple who, after being told by doctors they should abort their baby at week 20 due to serious conditions, decided that even one hour with their baby would be better than not giving him a chance to live.

His parents Julie Crampin, 36, and Antony Lara rejected advice to have the pregnancy terminated, and Marco was born with a range of serious conditions, including water on the brain, a hole in the heart and pyloric stenosis – a narrowing of the outlet of the stomach.

But the couple from Gloucester are delighted with their son and say he is making good progress.

Mr Lara, a 40-year-old hairdresser, said: “There was never a moment when we were in any doubt that we wanted him, even if he only lived for a day.

“Just to have had him alive for a few hours would have been better than not giving him the chance of life.”

Marco’s problems were revealed when his mother had a scan at 20 weeks.

Mr Lara said: “He was diagnosed as severely disabled. The chances of having him were minimal.

“We were told he could either be seriously disabled or die at birth, so we had big decisions to make.

“We were given the option of a termination, but we both became determined to have him.”

The couple managed to find hope in daily updates from doctors which, although still desperate, showed Marco to be a fighter.

  1. Thanks for posting that story. Great job of those parents to not “terminate” the pregnancy. It is interesting to me that the doctors didn’t recommend termination because the baby would be in constant pain (which wasn’t the prognosis) but because it would have severe physical defects, which, undoubtedly would cause “lifestyle pain” in the caregivers. Seems that the doctors have their own defects… Life is beautiful with or without physical defects.

  2. Justin, I would agree with you. If you read some of the comments readers left at the original article, you’ll see some who blast the parents for thinking only of themselves and not the baby–they say it would have been in the best interest of the baby to abort him. Huh??? What a messed-up world we live in.

  3. I am amazed at the difficult decisions in this life that we are forced to face at times. The decisions we make can affect so many others as well as our own life. That’s why it’s so important to pray about our decisions and listen to the Holy Spirit’s leading and then be obedient to his voice. When we are grounded in the Word of God, we will automatically know the right decision to make. I believe these parents knew the truths of God’s Word and made the only decision that was moral and right in God’s sight. Regardless of our fears of the future or inconveniences to our lifestyle, we have to choose life. The decision of life and death is only in God’s hands. We have to trust Him and let Him be in control in every situation.
